Dating safely

Most people you meet are exactly who they say. These habits protect you from the few who aren’t.

Know the signs of a romance scam

Watch for profiles that seem too good to be true, strong feelings very early, excuses for never meeting and sad stories that lead to a request for money. Never send money to someone you have only met online, and report it to Scamwatch.

Report cybercrime and blackmail through ReportCyber

If someone threatens you, blackmails you or steals from you online, report it through ReportCyber at cyber.gov.au, which passes reports to the right police force. Report scams to Scamwatch too, even if you did not lose money. In an emergency, call 000.

Swim between the flags on beach dates

Swim at a patrolled beach, between the red and yellow flags. If you are caught in a rip, stay calm and float, raise an arm for help and swim parallel to the beach towards the breaking waves.
